Propping and needling are the temporary works that hold a building safely while an opening is cut in a load-bearing wall. Propping carries the vertical loads on temporary supports; needling threads beams (the needles) through the wall to support the masonry above.

SEL's Slimshore soldier units provide this support using conventional propping and needling techniques. The same soldiers also work in concrete formwork as strongbacks, standing behind wall and column forms to resist the pressure of wet concrete, and in façade retention and basement work. Also known as formwork soldiers, strongbacks, Superslims, Slimlite and support props, they work as prop units, raking shores and needle beams.

Depending on the loading criteria, needle beams may be laterally restrained using light or heavy duty props. Heavy duty props are built up from Slimshore soldier units, which we supply alongside push pull props and acrow props.

You can read more in our in-depth article on the propping and needling approach.

Common Applications

Our propping and needling equipment is often used in the following applications:

  • Removal of old foundations
  • Building refurbishment
  • Facade retention
  • Basement construction
  • Wall support
  • Propping steelwork installations

Features & Benefits

  • Soldiers bolt end to end with a 4no. or 6no. M16x40 joint, so lengths build up quickly on site
  • One kit works as prop units, raking shores, needle beams and strongbacks
  • High load capacity in a light section, keeping handling safe and manageable
  • Anchored to a concrete base for stability throughout the works
  • Suits domestic properties through to commercial structures

Propping & Needling: Common Questions

What is the difference between propping and needling?
They go together but do different jobs. Propping holds vertical loads, from floors, walls or roofs, on temporary supports. Needling carries the masonry above a new opening by passing beams (needles) through the wall while it is cut, until permanent steelwork goes in.
When are needle beams required?
Needle beams are used when an opening, such as a doorway, window or larger access, is formed in a load-bearing wall. The needles carry the masonry and any floor or roof loads above the opening until permanent steelwork is installed.
What loads can the Slimshore system support?
Each soldier has a moment capacity of 42.5 kNm, shear capacity of 216.5 kN and an axial capacity of 232 kN at 4m, in grade S355 steel. Soldiers are connected with 4no. or 6no. M16x40 bolted joints to suit the loading. On heritage projects the system has supported masonry and roof loads of around 8 tonnes per metre.
Can the same equipment be used for concrete formwork?
Yes. Used as strongbacks, the soldiers stand vertically behind the form face and resist the lateral pressure of wet concrete, keeping wall and column forms straight and plumb. They can also carry soffit formwork for slabs.
Can propping and needling be used on heritage or older buildings?
Yes. The approach is regularly used on stone, traditional timber-frame and even cob-style walls, as well as standard masonry. The condition of the masonry affects the spacing between needles, which is determined as part of the temporary works design.
Do you provide temporary works design for propping and needling?
Yes. SEL's in-house Civil and Structural Engineers provide temporary works design to BS5975, including site investigation to assess foundations, bearing capacity and needle spacing. Contact your nearest depot to arrange a site visit.
