Grundoburst 400G / 800G Pipe Burster

A cost-effective way to burst mains, sewer or water pipes

  • Only requires a single operator
  • Can burst cast iron, steel, uPVC and more
  • Compact, low weight and manoeuvrable
  • Nationwide delivery
  • Competitive rates

Grundoburst is a static pipe bursting system for replacing a failing pipe along its existing line, without having to dig a trench along the route. You can burst cast iron, steel, uPVC, PE, AC, stoneware and GFRP pipes and pull the new pipe in behind the bursting head on the same pass. With the 400G you can replace old pipes from 50mm to 250mm diameter, and with the 800G from 80mm to 400mm.

Typical Grundoburst jobs

Our customers use Grundoburst where the old pipe is past repairing but where digging it out would be too expensive. Typical jobs include:

  • Water main renewal
  • Sewer renewal
  • Gas main replacement
  • Replacing deteriorated utility pipe
  • Pipe replacement beneath roads, driveways and hard standing
  • Upsizing an existing pipe to increase its capacity
  • Renewal where open-cut excavation would be too disruptive

How static pipe bursting works

Static bursting runs between two small pits, one to launch from and one to receive, leaving the ground in between untouched.

The operator first pushes a string of QuickLock rods through the old pipe until they reach the reception pit. There the crew couple a bursting head, an expander and the new pipe onto the end of the string, and the rig pulls the whole assembly back along the old line.

What happens to the old pipe depends on what it is made of. The blades cut tough materials such as steel, ductile iron and PE. Brittle materials such as cast iron, stoneware, concrete and asbestos cement break instead, and the expander presses the fragments out into the surrounding soil. Either way, the new pipe follows into the space as it opens up.

The word static refers to how the force is applied. The rig pulls steadily on the rod string from the launch pit, and all the cutting and breaking comes from that pull.

What comes with Grundoburst hire?

Each Grundoburst rig is supplied with 100m of QuickLock ladder rods and the remote control, and we can supply extra rods on request. We hire for short or long periods and deliver nationwide.

We match the bursting head and expander to the material and diameter of the old pipe. The crew then use a towing head to connect the new pipe to the back of the assembly. Tell us the pipe you are replacing and the pipe going in, and we will specify the tooling.

Every rig comes with safe use instructions, and we can run familiarisation training with your team before work starts. If your launch and reception pits need shoring, we also hire trench boxes and shoring equipment.

Benefits of the Grundoburst Pipe Burster

  • Renew pipes without having to dig a full trench
  • Simple installation allows a rapid start to works
  • Low weight for easier manoeuvrability on-site
  • Replace old pipes with even larger diameter pipes
  • Can be operated by one person

Common Questions

What is pipe bursting?
Pipe bursting is a way of replacing a failing pipe along its existing line. The Grundoburst employs a method called static pipe bursting, by which an operator uses the machine to push a string of rods through the old pipe from a launch pit. They then attach a bursting head and the new pipe at the reception pit, then pull the whole assembly back through, leaving a finished, renewed pipe.
Should I use the Grundoburst 400G or the 800G?
The 400G can burst pipes between 50mm and 250mm and pull in new pipe of up to 280mm diameter. Choose the 800G for existing pipes between 80mm and 400mm, with a max new pipe diameter of 400mm. The 800G also pulls with greater force (769kN against the 400G's 400kN at 250 bar), enabling it to burst stronger or thicker pipes.
What pipe materials can a Grundoburst burst?
A Grundoburst bursts cast iron, steel, uPVC, PE, AC, stoneware and GFRP. Tough materials such as steel and PE are cut by the blades, while brittle materials such as cast iron, stoneware and asbestos cement simply break and the expander presses the fragments out into the surrounding soil.
Can I install a larger pipe than the one I am replacing?
You can install a larger pipe than the one you are replacing, because the fragments of the old pipe are pushed outwards into the surrounding soil. Upsizing lets you increase the capacity of the line while renewing it. The limit is the max new pipe diameter for the rig – 280mm for the Grundoburst 400G and 400mm for the 800G.
How big a pit does a Grundoburst need?
A Grundoburst works from a launch pit and a reception pit rather than a trench along the route. The 800G has an axle height of 250mm and works from a pit around 4,500mm long by 1,500mm wide – and the 400G requires even less room than that. Pit depth is set by the depth of the pipe you are replacing.
What is supplied with Grundoburst hire?
Grundoburst hire includes the rig, 100m of QuickLock ladder rods and the remote control, with extra rods available on request. We match the bursting head and expander to your old pipe and supply a towing head to connect the new pipe. Every rig comes with safe use instructions.
Should I use a Grundoburst or an impact mole?
Use a Grundoburst where a pipe is already in the ground and you want to replace it along the same line. Use an impact mole to install a new pipe, duct or cable where nothing runs at present, in ground that will displace. A mole cannot follow or break out an existing pipe.
Is pipe bursting better than sliplining?
Pipe bursting is the better choice where you need to keep or increase the bore, since the new pipe can match or exceed the old diameter. With sliplining, a winch draws a smaller pipe through the old one, so you lose capacity, but it is a simpler process and suits a pipeline with capacity to spare.
