The RZE16 is a 16-tonne culvert puller for joining concrete pipes and box culverts. It runs on an internal 12V battery with a cordless remote, so there are no trailing hoses or cables in the trench. It handles internal pipe diameters from 800mm to 3000mm, pulling sections squarely home without damaging pipe faces or joints.

Applications and pipe types

Our customers use the RZE16 on large-diameter concrete pipe runs where every section has to be drawn home squarely onto the last one. Typical work includes:

  • Surface water and foul sewer runs in reinforced concrete pipe
  • Highway and access road drainage crossings
  • Box culvert runs
  • Outfall and headwall connections
  • Attenuation and storage pipe runs
  • Jointing where the trench is too tight to work around the outside of the pipe

How the RZE16 operates on site

The machine is lowered into the pipe on a chain sling. It runs along the invert on four wheels, and at the push of a button clamps hydraulically against the bore, the wheels swivelling up as the clamps take hold. Three large clamping surfaces spread the radial load across the bore to prevent concrete damage, and the maximum hydraulic pressure is steplessly adjustable to protect delicate joint details.

A pulling bar and polyester sling attach to the section going in. As the hydraulic cylinder retracts through its 500mm stroke, it draws that section squarely into the joint. The cylinder then extends again, a push button releases the clamps, and the machine rolls forward by one pipe length to the next joint.

Sections are lowered into the trench beforehand using pipe grabs or a pipe caddy.

Box culverts, special profiles and tandem pulls

The RZE16 adapts to non-standard pipe profiles and complex layouts:

  • Rectangular box culverts: Dedicated wide pulling bars (1400–2000mm and 1800–2600mm) ensure square pulls across flat culvert faces.
  • Kite and egg-shaped profiles: An optional four-track undercarriage keeps the machine stable in non-circular profiles.
  • Invert dry-weather channels: An undercarriage enlargement widens the wheelbase to 700mm to straddle invert channels (cunettes) cleanly.
  • Tandem pulls for wide culverts: Two RZE units can be operated in tandem for wide twin-cell box culverts or heavier draws.

Common Questions

What sizes and types of pipe can the RZE16 join?
The RZE16 joins circular reinforced concrete pipes from 800mm to 2500mm inside diameter, and up to 3000mm with the Adaptor 500 fitted. With dedicated rectangular pulling bars it also joins box culverts up to 2600mm wide, and optional undercarriages accommodate egg-shaped sewer profiles or pipes with an invert dry-weather channel (cunette). For wide twin-cell culverts, two RZE16 units can be twinned in tandem.
How is the RZE16 powered and controlled?
The RZE16 is powered by an onboard 12V 180Ah battery and controlled by cordless remote, eliminating trailing hydraulic hoses and generator cables in the pipe. The operator works clamping, pulling and release buttons from outside the trench pinch point. A spare battery and smart charger are supplied with every hire so one battery charges while the other works.
How does the RZE16 prevent damage to the pipe bore and joints?
The RZE16 prevents damage to the pipe bore and joints by clamping against the concrete using three wide, curved contact shoes that spread the radial load evenly. Hydraulic pressure is steplessly adjustable to suit the pipe wall, and pulling force is applied through a matched beam and soft polyester slings rather than steel chains.
How is the RZE16 moved along the pipe run?
The RZE16 moves along the pipe run on four wheels, needing only a single crane lift at the start of the line. When clamped, the wheels swivel up as the pads grip the bore. Once the joint is closed and released, the machine simply rolls forward by one pipe length to the next joint.
Should I hire the RZE16 or the Mity Mite?
Choose the RZE16 for reinforced concrete pipes and box culverts from 800mm to 3000mm where 16 tonnes of pulling force and cordless battery operation suit the site. Choose the Mity Mite for heavier draws up to 30 tonnes, steel pipes, or extra-large bores up to 3658mm (144").
What accessories are included with RZE16 hire?
RZE16 hire includes the puller unit, cordless remote control, spare 12V battery, smart charger, polyester strops in 4m, 6m and 8m lengths, and a pulling beam sized to your pipe bore or box culvert. Our technical team can also provide on-site familiarisation training upon delivery.

Hire the RZE16 Culvert Puller

We send the RZE16 out as a complete kit: the machine, a cordless remote, a spare battery and charger, polyester strops in 4m, 6m and 8m, and the pulling beam sized to your bore. Tell us the bore, the profile and the section weight and we will specify the rigging before delivery, and can run familiarisation training on site. To talk it through, contact your nearest depot.
