Propping and Needling

SEL supplies propping and needling equipment for the temporary support of buildings during structural alterations, demolition and refurbishment. Our systems can support walls, floors, façades and other structural elements while openings are formed, load-bearing walls are removed or loads are transferred. With in-house temporary works engineers, we can provide site-specific designs, calculations and technical support for projects ranging from straightforward alterations to complex façade retention and structural support schemes.

Use cases

  • Façade retention and external wall support
  • Large openings, beam and RSJ installations
  • Floor, roof and masonry support
  • Structural alterations and building refurbishment
  • Partial demolition and controlled deconstruction
  • Underpinning, basements and foundation works
  • Column removal and structural load transfer
  • Steel frame installation and structural replacement works
  • Party walls, boundary walls and chimney removals
  • Shopfront and commercial building alterations
  • Heritage restoration and façade preservation
  • Damaged-building stabilisation and emergency support
  • Support adjacent to excavations and neighbouring structures

Propping and needling often runs alongside the rest of a temporary works package, from the formwork for new foundations to the design that ties it all together.

Common questions

What is propping in construction?
Propping holds a structure's loads on temporary supports while work goes on beneath or beside it, whether that's a floor, a wall or a roof. Temporary propping systems range from single adjustable props to soldiers built up into needle beams and raking shores, and the right one depends on the load and height set out in the temporary works design.
What is the difference between propping and needling?
Propping holds vertical loads, from floors, walls or roofs, on temporary supports. Needling carries the masonry above a new opening by passing beams (the needles) through the wall while it is cut, until permanent steelwork goes in.
When are needle beams required?
Needle beams come in when an opening, a doorway, window or larger access is formed in a load-bearing wall. The needles carry the masonry and any floor or roof loads above the opening until the permanent steelwork is installed.
How much load can a propping and needling approach carry?
It depends on the system and the design. Our Slimshore soldiers have an axial capacity of 232kN at 4m. The safe figure for your wall will be set out in your temporary works design.
Can propping and needling be used on heritage or older buildings?
Yes. The approach is used on stone, timber-frame and even cob walls as well as standard masonry. The state of the masonry drives the spacing between needles, which is worked out as part of the temporary works design.
Do you provide temporary works design for propping and needling?
Yes. Our in-house Civil and Structural Engineers design to BS5975, including a site investigation to check foundations, bearing capacity and needle spacing. Contact your nearest depot to arrange a site visit.
How much does propping and needling cost to hire?
Hire is charged per week, and what you pay comes down to the systems your job needs, how much of each, and how long they stay on site. Our engineers put together an itemised kit list for each project, so you can see everything before you decide. Ask us for a quote and we'll price it up, often within 24 hours.
