What is a concrete pipe lifter?
A concrete pipe lifter is an electrohydraulic machine that joins reinforced concrete pipes and culverts during installation. SEL supplies the RZE16 (800–3000mm diameter, 16-tonne capacity) and the Mity Mite (up to 3650mm diameter, 30-tonne capacity). Both operate via cordless remote control and are powered by 12-volt batteries.
What equipment do I need to lift culverts?
You'll need a dedicated culvert puller rated for your pipe diameter and weight. The RZE16 handles culverts up to 16 tonnes (800–3000mm diameter), and the Mity Mite handles up to 30 tonnes (up to 3650mm diameter). Both are remote-controlled and battery-powered. For larger culverts, two machines can be used in tandem.
What's the best equipment for heavy pipe lifting?
For joining large culverts, the Mity Mite handles up to 30 tonnes and 3650mm diameter. For transporting and positioning during laying, the Pipe Caddy Plus is tested to 10,000kg and handles pipes up to 2400mm. For general handling, the 5-tonne pipe grab covers up to 1800mm across different materials.
Can I use the same pipe grab for different pipe materials?
Yes–SEL's pipe grabs handle concrete, clay, plastic and steel pipes within their size and weight ranges. The 2.5-tonne grab covers 275–1000mm, the 5-tonne grab covers 275–1800mm, both with rubber grippers for secure contact. Always check your specific pipe's weight against the grab's Safe Working Load.

Should I use a pipe caddy or a pipe grab?
A pipe caddy supports the pipe in a cradle for safe, steady transport and laying. It's best when you're handling consistent pipe sizes (300–1200mm standard, 1200–2400mm for the Plus). A pipe grab grips pipes from the sides and works across a range of sizes (275–1800mm in a single grab), so it's more flexible for mixed sizes or tight spaces during installation. Use a caddy for bulk transport; use a grab for variety and positioning.
Do I need manhole ring lifters or lifting pins?
Lifting pins are simpler and cheaper if you already have chain slings and a crane. They attach to the cast-in eyes on precast rings. A mechanical manhole ring lifter is self-contained and faster, making it better for installing multiple rings. For a one-off job, pins may be enough; for production work, a dedicated lifter saves time and improves safety.
Can I use chains and slings instead of specialized pipe handling equipment?
Chains and slings work with lifting pins on manhole rings that have cast-in eyes. For general pipe lifting, specialized equipment (caddies, grabs, culvert pullers) is safer and more efficient because they're designed to distribute load evenly and protect the pipe. Large-diameter pipes especially need proper cradles or grips – chains alone don't provide enough support.
