Edge Protection and Access

Excavation edge protection is a physical barrier system installed around the perimeter of an open excavation to prevent personnel, equipment and loose materials from falling in. Under the UK Work at Height Regulations 2005 and CDM 2015, edge protection must feature top guardrails, mid-rails and toeboards, and is typically constructed from tubular steel or mesh panels attached directly to shoring equipment.

The primary UK regulations governing excavation edge protection and access are the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) and the Work at Height Regulations 2005. CDM 2015 requires suitable barriers or covers to prevent falls into excavations, while the Work at Height Regulations specify that collective fall prevention equipment (such as guardrails meeting BS EN 13374) must be prioritized over personal fall arrest. Additionally, lifting equipment used for davit retrieval must comply with LOLER 1998.

Workers safely enter and exit a shored excavation using secured ladders or site stairways accessed through a gated landing platform. HSE guidance requires access ladders to stand on a firm base, be tied off against slipping and extend at least 1 metre above the landing place. Attaching a gated ladder access platform directly to trench boxes or sheets ensures the excavation edge remains fully guarded while workers transition onto the ladder.

The choice between tube steel barriers and steel mesh barriers depends on your containment needs and multi-system compatibility. Tube steel barriers offer robust, rigid handrail protection pinned directly to trench boxes. Steel mesh barriers provide all-in-one debris containment (combining guardrail, mid-rail and toeboard) and can adapt to formwork and propping systems as well as shoring.

Guard rails around the top of an excavation prevent workers, site visitors and ground personnel from accidentally slipping or stepping off the edge into an open trench. They also create a clear physical boundary for plant machinery and, when combined with toeboards or mesh containment, prevent loose soil, hand tools and materials from being kicked or knocked into the excavation where operatives are working below.

This standard specifies performance requirements and testing methods for temporary edge protection (Class A for flat/static edge protection, Class B for low inclines and Class C for high-energy fall containment), ensuring systems withstand specified horizontal and vertical loads.
