The Grundowinch is a constant tension cable pulling winch, which we hire in pulling capacities from 3 to 10 tonnes. Contractors use it to draw cable through existing ducts, pull new pipe into place and slipline old pipelines. The operator has complete control over the line speed and the pulling force, which prevents the cable or pipe being installed becoming stretched.
What jobs can a cable winch be used for?
Utility and civils contractors use a cable winch for two kinds of work. The first is pulling cable into ducting already in the ground, whether that is power, telecoms or fibre. The second is pulling pipe, either drawing new PE pipe into a bore or sliplining a new pipe through a failing one. Common uses include:
- Pulling power cable through existing ducts
- Sliplining an old pipeline with a new, smaller pipe
- Installing underground electricity cables
- Pulling telecoms and fibre optic cables
- Pulling PE pipe into place
- Utility installation and diversion work
Benefits of the Grundowinch
- Safety — The winch is operated hands-free and from a distance, so workers are well clear of a line under tension. There are no exposed moving parts, and every machine has an emergency stop and stowaway wheel chocks.
- Low noise — The Grundowinch is built to absorb sound and suits night shifts and sites with noise limits.
- Adaptable — the winch can be easily towed on site. There is a 2 metre draft arm for deeper pits.
- No site power needed — a 15kW three-cylinder diesel drives the winch independently so there is no waiting on a supply.
- Printers available — the Grundowinch can be supplied with a printer for logging pull tension and distance.
Why controlled pulling force matters
Every cable and every pipe has a maximum tension it will take, and going past that limit does the damage out of sight. Cable gives way at the conductor, the insulation, the screen or the sheath, and over-pulling draws the conductors out of their lay. None of that shows from the outside. The damage surfaces at testing, or later as reduced insulation resistance. PE pipe stretches instead, and can be damaged beyond use; ASTM F1804 sets the allowable tensile load.
A constant tension winch holds the force the operator has set rather than snatching at the load. Sizing matters as much as control: too small a winch stalls part way, which tempts the crew into snatching the load free. Tell us the cable or pipe, the duct length and the bends, and we will advise which of our winches suits the job.
What comes with Grundowinch hire
Each winch is supplied with its rope on the drum, the remote control, the draft arm and the in-line meter counter. We can supply a machine with a printer where the job needs a record of the pull, and we hire for short or long periods with nationwide delivery.
If the winch is working from a pit, we also hire trench boxes and shoring equipment.
