Single Acting Brace System

A lightweight hydraulic bracing frame for small manhole installations and drainage repairs

  • Sheet-to-sheet range of 1.8m to 2.7m
  • Supports excavations up to 3m deep
  • Ideal for sites using smaller excavators
  • Simple pin-and-joint leg assembly
  • Maximum permissible load of 38 kN/m
  • Nationwide delivery across the UK

The Single Acting Brace System is a lightweight, easy-to-use hydraulic frame designed to support trench sheets in small excavations. It is ideal for manhole installations, drainage repairs, and tight urban sites where only small machinery is available.

With a sheet-to-sheet operating range of 1.8m to 2.7m, the single acting manhole brace can safely support excavations up to 3 metres deep in good ground conditions. It provides a crucial safety barrier, retaining the soil face to protect operatives working within the trench.

Typical applications

  • Small manhole installations and chamber construction
  • Localised drainage repairs and pipeline maintenance
  • Utility trenches in restricted urban environments
  • Pits where limited lifting capacity is available

How the Single Acting Brace works

The system is built from a series of single-piece hydraulic legs that connect at the corners using a simple pin-and-joint method. This creates a rigid four-sided frame that sits horizontally inside the excavation.

Once lowered into the trench, the hydraulic rams are pumped out using a manual or powered hydraulic pump, expanding the frame against the trench sheets to apply active pressure to the ground walls. The legs offer a generous 900mm hydraulic ram stroke, providing excellent flexibility to adapt to varying trench dimensions without requiring constant leg extensions.

Easy handling on site

Weighing just 400kg for a complete frame, the Single Acting Brace System is one of the lightest hydraulic frames in our range. This makes it exceptionally easy to assemble, install, and extract, requiring only a small excavator or site machine to lift it into position.

Single Acting Brace: Common Questions

What is a single acting brace system?
A single acting brace system is a lightweight, four-sided hydraulic frame used to support trench sheets in small, square or rectangular excavations. The "single acting" term refers to the single hydraulic leg design used on each side, which makes the system light enough to be handled by smaller site machinery.
What size excavations can the single acting brace support?
The single acting brace can support excavations with a sheet-to-sheet dimension ranging from a minimum of 1.8 metres up to a maximum of 2.7 metres. When used in good ground conditions, it can brace trenches up to 3 metres deep.
What is the maximum permissible load of the single acting brace?
The AA type single acting brace offers a maximum permissible load of 38 kN/m when fully retracted to 1.8m, scaling down to 12.8 kN/m when fully extended to its maximum 2.7m span.
What machinery is needed to install a single acting brace?
Because the complete assembled frame weighs only 400kg, a single acting brace can be easily installed and extracted using a small excavator or mini-digger, making it ideal for restricted sites.
How much adjustment does the hydraulic ram provide?
The hydraulic ram on the single acting brace provides 900mm of stroke. This generous adjustment allows the frame to easily adapt to uneven trench walls or varying widths between 1.8m and 2.7m.
