Trench Box End Closure Panels

End Closure Panels are heavy-duty steel plates designed to seal the open, un-shored ends of a trench box. By completely closing off the excavation perimeter, they provide crucial 360-degree earth support when a battered slope is not feasible, or when working around confined junction boxes and manholes.

Available for sale and hire nationwide, SEL’s End Closure Panels are universally compatible with our Lightweight (Lite), Standard, and Manhole Box systems.

Core capabilities and applications

Total perimeter security. A standard trench box only supports the two lateral walls of a trench. If the excavation cannot be battered back safely at the ends, groundworkers are exposed to the risk of a longitudinal earth collapse. End closure panels drop directly into place behind the box panels to eliminate this risk, making them essential for:

• Eliminating the risk of longitudinal earth collapse
• Avoiding the need to batter back slopes where space is limited
• Providing four-sided support when working around existing infrastructure
• Terminating a trench run safely

Efficiency over battering. Traditional "battering" (sloping) of trench ends requires significant extra space, increases the volume of excavated material, and adds costly machine time. Employing end closure panels is a faster, more space-efficient method that reduces your overall site footprint and accelerates the backfilling process.

Site handling and mechanics

Modular heights. The panels are supplied in two height formats to match your box configuration: a 2.6m Base panel and a 1.4m Top panel. If your excavation is deep and requires top boxes, the 1.4m Top End Closure Panels can be stacked and securely joined using the provided connectors.

Versatile width range. To accommodate different trench widths and spindle extensions, the panels are available in six distinct widths from 1.0m up to 3.5m. The 60mm thick panels offer a robust permissible earth pressure capacity, though this is ultimately governed by the maximum permissible pressure of the host box system.

Critical safety note: When installing End Closure Panels, it is a strict operational requirement that the panels must not transfer any earth load into the box spindles. They must bear directly against the main structural plates of the trench box.
