The Standard Trench Box system is our heavy-duty workhorse trench shield for typical drainage, sewer, and utility excavations. Designed to support unstable ground and withstand high earth pressures, this modular shoring system allows contractors to safely lay pipes at depths of up to 5.30m.

Available for sale and hire across the UK, SEL's Standard system pairs robust 2.6m base boxes with 1.4m top boxes. It strikes the ideal balance between heavy-duty capacity and practical site handling, making it the bedrock of most deep groundwork projects.

Core capabilities and applications

The default choice for drainage. If you are excavating a standard sewer or deep utility trench, our Standard Trench Box is the correct system. It provides a generous 1.50m of pipe clearance beneath the lowest struts, making it ideal for:

  • Deep trench excavations in unstable ground
  • Large diameter pipe laying and culvert installation
  • Deep utility and drainage works
  • Large chamber construction

For exceptionally large culverts requiring more than 1.50m clearance, we recommend our Hi-Clear Box System. Conversely, for shallow, restricted urban works, our Lightweight Trench Boxes are often more capable.

Operational mechanics and capacity

Modular depth capability. The system is highly adaptable to the demands of deep excavations. By bolting up to two 1.4m top boxes onto the 2.6m base box (using box connection units and heavy-duty pins), the system can safely shore trenches down to a recommended maximum depth of 5.30m.

Adjustable widths. The trench width is controlled by swapping the strut system between Mini, Midi, or Maxi adjustable spindles. With the addition of spindle extension pieces, the external width can be expanded from a narrow 0.85m right up to a massive 4.48m.

Dig and push installation. Because the Standard Box is deployed in deeper, often unstable or water-bearing ground, it is designed for the "dig and push" method. The base box is placed in a shallow pre-excavated trench (maximum 1.25m deep), and an excavator digs from within the box, pushing the heavy steel panels down incrementally as the excavation progresses. This ensures the groundworkers are never exposed to unsupported earth.
