The Lightweight Trench Box is an adaptable steel trench shield designed to shore up shallow to medium utility excavations safely. Weighing significantly less than our standard boxes, it provides robust earth support for sites where excavator lifting capacity is limited.

Available for sale and hire across the UK, SEL's Lightweight Trench Box strikes a critical balance between heavy-duty protection and site-friendly logistics. While it offers the durability of steel, its reduced weight profile allows it to be safely handled by smaller site plant, saving you the expense and logistical headache of bringing in heavy machinery.

Core Capabilities and Applications

When you are installing utilities or drainage in urban environments where space and plant size are restricted, the Lightweight Trench Box is the optimal choice. It is capable of resisting up to 34.1 kN/m² of earth pressure, making it ideal for:

• Urban street works and utility trenching
• Shallow to medium drainage installations
• Sites with limited machinery lifting capacity
• Projects requiring rapid deployment

If you are working with extremely restricted lifting capacity, such as a mini-excavator, you may prefer our plastic and steel Ultra Lite Utility Box. Conversely, for deep sewers and large culverts, our Standard Trench Box System is the required upgrade.

Operational Mechanics and Site Handling

Manageable box weights. The 2.00m base box combined with Type A spindles starts at just 743kg. Even our longest 4.00m base box remains under 1,650kg. This ensures the system can be safely deployed and extracted by mid-sized excavators.

Adaptable depth and width. The system is highly modular. You can achieve greater depths by adding a 1.00m-high top box to the 2.00m base box. The trench width itself is controlled by swapping the internal spindles (Type A through F), allowing for internal trench widths ranging from a narrow 0.53m right up to a generous 3.08m.

Generous pipe clearance. Every 2.0m-high base box provides a vertical pipe clearance height of 940mm beneath the lowest struts, leaving ample room to lay and bed standard utility pipes and drainage.
