  • Used for double-acting hydraulic cylinders
  • Formulated for groundworks applications
  • Available for nationwide delivery

Shoring fluid is a specialised hydraulic medium used to pressurise and operate the hydraulic rams within temporary groundworks support systems. It transfers force from hydraulic pumps to the cylinders, extending the bracing to support trench walls.

Standard mineral oils carry a high risk of soil and water contamination if a hose fails or a cylinder leaks on site. To mitigate this, our shoring fluid is formulated as an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL), making it suitable for ground-based temporary works.

System operation and compatibility

The fluid is pumped into the cylinders to adjust the bracing system to the required trench width. Once pressurised to the system's requirements, the fluid is locked in using self-sealing valves to maintain structural support. It is compatible with standard double-acting hydraulic systems, including manhole brace assemblies, waling rails, and hydraulic trench boxes. The formulation is designed to work with both single and double-acting shoring pumps, maintaining the correct viscosity to protect internal seals and lock-off valves.

Environmental compliance and handling

As an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL), the fluid breaks down naturally in the event of a leak or spill in an excavation. This significantly reduces the environmental impact compared to standard hydraulic oils, making it a mandatory requirement when working near watercourses or in sensitive environmental zones. The fluid can be easily transported and dispensed on site, with the 5-litre volume making it practical to top up manual or motorised shoring pumps as required.

Shoring Fluid: Common Questions

What is shoring fluid used for?
Shoring fluid is the hydraulic medium used to extend and retract the cylinders in trench support systems. It transfers force from the pump to the bracing, applying outward pressure to support the excavation walls.
Why must shoring fluid be an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL)?
Shoring fluid must be an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) because temporary works are ground-based. If a leak occurs during excavation, an EAL will break down naturally, preventing the long-term soil and groundwater contamination that standard hydraulic oils would cause.
Can standard hydraulic oil be used instead of shoring fluid in excavations?
No, standard hydraulic oil cannot be used instead of shoring fluid in excavations because it is toxic to the environment. Using standard oils in groundworks risks severe contamination and heavy penalties if a leak occurs. You must always use a specified, biodegradable shoring fluid.
What temporary works equipment requires shoring fluid?
Shoring fluid is required for temporary works equipment such as hydraulic manhole braces, waling rails, vertical shores, and any associated single or double-acting hydraulic pumps used to operate these support systems.
