Trench struts are heavy-duty, adjustable steel props designed specifically for horizontal use in temporary groundworks. Fitted with clawed end plates, they firmly grip timber walers to support trench walls, preventing collapse and ensuring a safe working environment for groundworkers.
Also known as trench props or pin-and-thread struts, they are a fundamental component for shallow, non-complex trenching where continuous steel box systems are either impractical or unnecessary. They are primarily used to hold timber waling boards securely against trench walls, or to provide horizontal cross-strutting between opposing rows of trench sheets.
Because they can be installed by hand, these struts are particularly well-suited for shoring narrow excavations for pipe laying and cable routing, or for securing small-scale groundworks where access is restricted and manual handling is required.
Proper installation is a critical safety procedure. Following a site assessment by a competent person, the struts are positioned horizontally between the trench walls. Adjustment is straightforward: a heavy-duty steel pin is removed, the inner tube is extended to the approximate width of the trench, and the pin is replaced. The integral threaded collar is then rotated to finely tension the strut against the timber walers.
To ensure maximum stability, the 75mm x 75mm end plates feature turned-over, clawed edges. This design bites directly into the timber, preventing the strut from slipping laterally or dropping under vibration. They also feature nail holes, allowing contractors to secure them firmly to the walers for additional safety.
To remain compliant with BS 5975 temporary works procedures, struts must be regularly inspected by a competent person. Daily checks – especially after heavy rain, ground vibration, or prolonged use – are essential to ensure the pins, threads, and timber grips remain secure and undamaged.
