A circular muck skip is a steel crane skip used to lift soil, muck, and demolition rubble out of excavations and tight site areas. It empties itself automatically when lifted by a crane or excavator, so no one has to stand underneath or touch the bucket to tip it out. Because it is round, wet muck cannot get stuck in corners, and it drops cleanly through narrow trench boxes and shoring. Site Equipment Limited supplies circular muck skips for hire and sale across the UK.

Typical Applications

  • Deep trench spoil removal
  • Shaft and caisson muck-away
  • High-rise demolition debris handling
  • Confined basement excavation lifting
  • Foundation ballast clearance
  • Scaffolding loading bay clearance

How the Self-Tipping Mechanism Works

The skip suspends from a crane hook or certified excavator eye using a fold-down tubular steel bale arm. During transit across site, mechanical safety locking fingers on both sides hold the arm upright, securing the bucket against accidental tilting or premature load release.

To empty the skip:

  1. Slew the loaded skip over the muck heap, muck-away lorry, or roll-on/roll-off bin.
  2. Disengage the mechanical safety locks manually while the skip rests safely on or just above the discharge area.
  3. Hoist the crane hook upward. As the arm lifts, the offset centre of gravity causes the container to roll forward on its trunnions and invert completely, dumping the load hands-free.
  4. Lower the skip back down. Resting the empty bucket on level ground swings the body upright automatically, re-engaging the safety catches before the next cycle.

Design & Site Clearance Advantages

Unlike wide rectangular boat skips, circular muck skips feature a cylindrical steel drum without internal corners, preventing wet clay, silt, and stiff mortar from wedging in crevices.

Their compact footprint also simplifies vertical transit through narrow shoring struts, sheet piled cofferdams, and tight scaffolding loading bays where broader plant attachments risk catching on temporary works.

All muck skips from Site Equipment Limited are fully plated with certified Safe Working Loads (SWL) and supplied with current LOLER 1998 test certification. Available for sale or hire with prompt delivery from our regional depots in Bristol, Cardiff, and London.

Common Questions

How does a self-tipping muck skip discharge without manual tipping?
A self-tipping muck skip empties automatically using the relative centre of gravity between the cylindrical tub and the fold-down bale arm. Once the manual safety locks are released at the tipping point, raising the crane hook causes the skip to pivot forward on its trunnions and discharge its contents cleanly without an operative touching the bucket.
What sizes and capacities of circular muck skips are available for hire?
Circular muck skips are available for hire in capacities ranging from 150 litres (0.15m³) up to 2,000 litres (2.0m³), with Safe Working Loads spanning 300kg to 4,000kg to suit compact urban excavations through to high-volume civil muck-away operations.
Can circular muck skips be lifted using an excavator as well as a crane?
Yes. Circular muck skips can be slung from either a mobile or tower crane or directly from an excavator's certified lifting eye using appropriate certified lifting chains or a single-leg drop chain, provided the excavator has an approved lifting chart and hose burst check valves under LOLER regulations.
What safety mechanisms prevent the muck skip from tipping accidentally during lifting?
Muck skips prevent accidental tipping using mechanical safety locking fingers mounted on both sides of the bucket. These safety fingers hold the lifting bale arm securely locked in the upright vertical position throughout the lift, preventing tipping until they are deliberately disengaged at the designated discharge area.
What lifting regulations apply to hiring and using muck skips on UK sites?
Muck skips used on UK construction sites are classified as lifting accessories and fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) and BS EN 13155. Every skip hired from Site Equipment Limited is supplied with a valid 6-month thorough examination test certificate, individual serialisation, and a clearly stamped Safe Working Load (SWL).
What is the difference between a circular muck skip and a forklift tipping skip?
The primary difference is the lifting interface and handling method: circular muck skips are crane-suspended via a fold-down bale arm for vertical lifting out of deep trenches, shafts, and scaffolding bays, whereas forklift tipping skips feature integral fork pockets designed for horizontal transport and tipping via site telehandlers and forklifts.
