Scaffold Boards
Standard timber, composite and steel scaffold boards for sale or hire across the UK.
- Graded BS 2482 timber (1.2m and 1.5m spans)
- Supadeck composite plastic boards for clean or wet sites
- Galvanised steel staging battens for hot works
- Fast delivery from Bristol, Cardiff and London depots
We supply standard timber scaffold boards, composite plastic boards and galvanised steel staging battens for sale or hire nationwide. All timber boards are graded to BS 2482 for 1.2m or 1.5m spans, with galvanised end bands fitted as standard.
Typical Applications
- Tube and fitting scaffold decking
- Sole plates for Acrow props
- Staging for system scaffolds
- Scaffold toeboards for edge protection
- Trestle staging for interior brickwork
- Temporary site walkways
Choosing Between Timber, Composite and Steel
Site conditions, fire regulations and duration dictate which board material fits the job:
Timber (BS 2482)
Graded timber boards are the standard choice for general construction, masonry and tube-and-fitting scaffolding. We supply 38mm thick European Whitewood boards graded to BS 2482 with galvanised steel end bands to prevent splitting. Standard boards are rated for transoms at up to 1.2m centres, while our heavy-duty timber boards are graded for 1.5m centres.
Supadeck Composite Plastic
Supadeck boards are made from glass-fibre reinforced polymer and do not absorb moisture. On long winter projects, timber boards absorb rainwater, gain weight and can rot. Supadeck boards stay at their dry tare weight, do not rot and will not splinter. They are jet-washable and resistant to oil and solvents, making them suitable for food processing plants, chemical facilities and industrial shutdown work.
Galvanised Steel Battens
Steel battens are Class A1 non-combustible and will not catch fire from burning, hot cutting or welding operations. Perforated, dimpled tread patterns give positive footing in wet or muddy conditions and allow site slurry to drain through instead of collecting on the deck.
Platform Setup and TG20 Guidance
Platform safety depends on proper board layout, transom spacing and overhang control under NASC TG20 operational guidance:
- Overhang limits: Keep board ends extending between 50mm and 150mm past the supporting transom (roughly four times the 38mm board thickness). Overhangs under 50mm can slip off transoms under site vibration. Overhangs over 150mm create cantilevered "trap ends" that flip if a worker steps on them.
- Securing short boards: Any board shorter than 2.13m (7ft) supported across only two transoms must be mechanically secured with board-retaining couplers or ties. Unsecured short boards tip easily under point loads.
- Toeboards: Working platforms require toeboards at least 150mm high fitted flush against the standards along all open edges to prevent tools, materials and debris from falling.
Scaffold Boards: Common Questions
What is the standard support span for timber scaffold boards?
What are the rules for scaffold board overhangs?
When should steel or composite plastic scaffold boards be used instead of timber?
Do short scaffold boards need to be tied down on site?
