Trench Sheet Extractors

Trench sheet extractors are heavy-duty lifting accessories engineered specifically for pulling overlap trench sheets and sheet piles out of the ground safely and efficiently.

When temporary groundworks are complete, removing installed sheets requires dedicated lifting equipment. Trench sheet extractors provide a secure, certified connection point between the head of a sheet and an excavator or crane, ensuring the profile is pulled cleanly from the trench while groundworkers remain at a safe distance.

Secure attachment and lifting

To perform a lift, the extractor is lowered over the profile of the sheet so that its heavy-duty jaws align with the pre-drilled handling hole. A robust threaded pin is wound directly through the sheet and secured with a secondary safety R-clip to prevent any accidental release under load.

The extractor connects to the lifting machine via a single leg drop chain, which should ideally be fitted with a swivel locking hook. As the sheet is pulled upwards, the swivel hook prevents the lifting chain from twisting and allows the extractor to align naturally with the vertical forces.

Managing extraction forces and soil cohesion

Extracting sheets requires significantly more force than installing them. Operators must account for soil cohesion, which binds to the buried steel and creates sudden shock loads as the sheet breaks free. These shock loads can exceed twice the static weight of the sheet itself.

Because of this unpredictability and the risk of chain failure under extreme tension, all personnel must remain completely clear of the excavation during extraction. We mandate a minimum 10-metre exclusion zone around the pulling area. A steady, controlled pull is essential – sudden jerks will overstress the lifting apparatus.

Choosing the right extractor

It is critical to match the extractor's Working Load Limit (WLL) to the type of sheet being removed. For standard overlap, L8, and KD4 trench sheets, the 4.0 tonne model provides ample capacity. If you are extracting heavier KD6 profiles or large interlocking SEI sheet piles, the heavier 7.0 tonne extractor must be used to safely handle the increased drag and static weight.

Please note that these tools are strictly for vertical extraction. They cannot be used to handle, guide, or drive sheets into the ground. If you are installing sheets, you must use a dedicated pitching shackle.
