Standard Trench Sheets

Lightweight, everyday steel trench sheets for straightforward ground support and shallow excavation works.

  • Lapped profile for everyday use
  • 330mm effective width
  • Just 10.8kg per metre
  • 1.5m to 5.0m lengths in stock
  • Rapid nationwide delivery
  • Available for sale or hire

Our standard trench sheets provide a lightweight, cost-effective solution for supporting the vertical sides of small-to-medium trenches and everyday excavations. They are available for sale or hire across the UK.

Designed with a simple overlapping (lapped) profile, these standard sheets improve site safety by preventing earth collapse during groundworks. Because they do not use a complex interlocking clutch, they are extremely fast to position and install.

At a weight of just 10.8kg per metre and a 3.4mm thickness, the standard trench sheet is easy to handle on site, typically driven vertically using an excavator bucket and a driving cap.

Typical applications

  • Shallow drainage and utility works
  • Localised ground support
  • Cable laying trenches
  • Small-scale tank installations
  • Temporary retaining walls in stable ground

How standard lapped sheets work

Unlike heavy-duty interlocking piles, standard lapped trench sheets are designed to simply overlap each other along the trench line, providing a continuous wall of earth retention. Once driven into the ground using a 'dig and push' or pre-drive method, the sheets are then secured using a bracing system—typically timber walings with trench struts, or aluminium waler frames—to maintain lateral stability.

Standard Trench Sheets: Common Questions

What are standard trench sheets?
Standard trench sheets are lightweight, cold-rolled steel profiles used to support the vertical walls of shallow trenches, preventing earth collapse and ensuring a safe working environment during groundwork.
What is the difference between standard lap and interlocking sheets?
Standard lapped sheets simply overlap one another to retain the surrounding soil, whereas interlocking sheets (such as the SEI profile) feature structural clutches that connect together to provide higher structural integrity and groundwater exclusion.
What lengths of standard trench sheet are available?
Our standard trench sheets are available in lengths ranging from 1.50m up to 5.00m, accommodating a wide variety of shallow trench depths and ground support requirements.
How are standard trench sheets installed?
Standard trench sheets are typically driven vertically into the ground using an excavator bucket fitted with a driving cap to prevent damage. They are usually installed using a 'dig and push' method before being braced horizontally.
Can standard trench sheets be reused on other projects?
Yes, standard trench sheets are manufactured from durable steel and can be extracted and reused multiple times, provided they are handled and driven carefully to avoid structural damage.
