BD500 trench sheets are high-yield steel, overlapping profiles designed to support medium-to-heavy excavations where a high strength-to-weight ratio is required without stepping up to fully interlocking piles.

BD500 sheets provide a robust temporary or permanent earthworks retention solution. With a 6.0mm thickness and an effective width of 495mm, they bridge the gap between lightweight standard sheets and heavier interlocking profiles.

They are ideal for small-to-medium groundworks, including utility trenches, sewerage installations, basement excavations, and foundation works. Their overlapping profile makes them quick and easy to handle, pitch, and drive using conventional site equipment. They are fully compatible with standard light-duty drive caps and extractors.

Overlapping vs Interlocking

Because BD500 sheets have a lapped (overlapping) profile, they do not provide the watertight seal of a fully interlocking sheet. If running sand or significant groundwater ingress is a concern on your site, we strongly recommend upgrading to an interlocking profile such as the SEI sheet.

BD500 Trench Sheets: Common Questions

What are BD500 trench sheets used for?
BD500 trench sheets are used for temporary and permanent ground support in medium-to-heavy excavations, including utility trenches, basement construction, and sewerage works.
What is the difference between BD500 and standard trench sheets?
BD500 sheets are thicker (6.0mm vs 3.4mm) and significantly stronger than standard sheets, offering an allowable bending moment of 36.4 kNm/m compared to 8.5 kNm/m. This makes them suitable for deeper or heavier excavations.
Are BD500 trench sheets interlocking?
No, BD500 trench sheets have a lapped (overlapping) profile. While this makes them quick and easy to install, they do not provide a watertight seal. For water sealing, an interlocking profile like the SEI sheet is required.
What is the effective width of a BD500 trench sheet?
The effective width of a BD500 trench sheet when overlapped and installed is 495mm. The overall physical width of a single uninstalled sheet is 515mm.
Can BD500 sheets be driven with standard equipment?
Yes, BD500 sheets are compatible with standard light-duty trench sheet drive caps and extraction tools, meaning they can be handled using standard site excavators and attachments.
