Caged Crane Fork

A steel-mesh safety cage and pallet fork system for overhead crane lifting of bricks and blocks

  • Safe Working Load up to 2,000kg
  • Telescopic cage replaces safety nets
  • Accommodates standard UK Euro pallets
  • Current LOLER test certificate supplied
  • Rapid delivery from local depots

SEL's caged crane fork combines heavy-duty pallet tines with a fully integrated steel mesh safety enclosure for lifting palletised building materials by crane. The telescopic cage surrounds the entire pallet, preventing falling debris if banding breaks or timber pallets fail.

Typical Applications

  • Strapped facing brick pack hoisting
  • Dense concrete block and paver distribution
  • Scaffold loading bay pallet placement
  • Palletised clay and slate roof tile lifting
  • Bagged mortar and screed transport
  • Vehicle offloading in restricted-access areas

Integrated Steel Mesh Enclosure

Standard crane forks rely on loose fabric restraint nets that take minutes to lash, snag on scaffold poles, and tear on sharp brick corners. Our caged crane fork eliminates secondary nets entirely by integrating a rigid steel mesh cage directly over the fork assembly on vertical telescopic guide rails.

The steel wire mesh enclosure acts as a rigid secondary holding device for loose building products. Any displaced pavers, broken block fragments, or snapping pallet timber remain securely captured inside the steel enclosure throughout the lift.

How the Telescopic Cage Operates

The outer safety cage runs smoothly along the mast on a telescopic guide. Operation requires no manual slinging or net tying between lifts:

  1. Raise the cage: Pull the safety locking pin and raise the crane hook. The outer cage telescopes upward, leaving the fork tines clear at ground level.
  2. Enter the pallet: Guide the exposed tines fully into the timber pallet pockets.
  3. Enclose the load: Lower the hoist until the steel cage drops back down over the pallet, enclosing all four sides. Re-insert the locking pin to secure the cage in transit.
  4. Hoist and land: Lift directly to the scaffold bay or upper floor slab. Pull the pin, telescope the cage clear, and withdraw the forks.

Machine Hitching and Compatibility

A central rated lifting eye connects directly to tower cranes, mobile cranes, and excavators via a certified Grade 8 drop chain sling. For telehandlers and rough-terrain forklifts, fit a certified forklift adaptor over the forks. Always check the machine's load chart to account for the combined weight of the attachment and payload.

Caged Crane Fork: Common Questions

What is a caged crane fork used for?
A caged crane fork is used for lifting palletised construction materials—such as facing bricks, concrete blocks, paving slabs and roof tiles—via a tower crane, mobile crane or excavator. The integrated steel mesh cage completely encloses the pallet during transit, preventing falling debris or loose masonry if a pallet breaks or strapping snaps.
How does the telescopic cage on a caged crane fork operate?
The telescopic cage on a caged crane fork operates on vertical guide rails secured by a locking pin. On the ground, pulling the pin allows the crane to hoist the outer cage upwards along its telescopic run, exposing the fork tines so they can slide under a pallet. Once the forks are fully inserted, lowering the crane drops the cage back down over the pallet, completely enclosing the load before the locking pin is re-engaged for lifting.
What is the Safe Working Load of a caged crane fork?
The Safe Working Load (SWL) of the caged crane fork is 2,000kg (2.0 tonnes), accommodating standard commercial UK masonry and palletised brick packs.
Do you need a separate safety net when using a caged crane fork?
No, you do not need a separate safety net when using a caged crane fork. The integrated steel wire mesh cage provides a permanent, rigid secondary holding device that satisfies BS EN 13155 containment requirements, eliminating the time and wear associated with fitting loose fabric restraint nets.
What pallet sizes can a caged crane fork accommodate?
A caged crane fork accommodates all standard UK timber pallets measuring 1,200mm × 1,000mm, as well as standard Euro pallets measuring 1,200mm × 800mm.
Can a caged crane fork be used with a telehandler or forklift?
Yes, a caged crane fork can be used with a telehandler or forklift by fitting a certified forklift adaptor over the machine tines. The adaptor provides a central overhead lifting hook, though the machine operator must check the telehandler's load chart to account for the combined weight of the attachment and payload.
How often must caged crane forks be inspected under LOLER?
Caged crane forks must be thoroughly examined at least every six months under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Site Equipment Limited supplies every hired or purchased caged crane fork with an up-to-date LOLER test certificate.
